The San Fernando Valley Dental Hygienists’ Society is comprised of dedicated dental professionals. Our member hygienists realize the importance of membership. Membership enables us to be a strong voice in the future of our profession. CDHA our state association, keeps us abreast of current news regarding legislative proposed laws and initiatives that may impact our profession. ADHA , the national association lets us know what’s happening in other states. The San Fernando Valley component has a board that provides monthly CE courses from September to May of each year. Participates in health fairs, works with dental hygiene students, and provides scholarships to senior hygiene students.

President’s Message
John Newbern once said, “People can be divided into three groups: Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what has happened.” This quote is meaningful to me in many ways, and completely describes the world in which we live. Our professional world is a microcosm of the whole, and defines who we are. Excellence in clinical dental hygiene, knowledge and professionalism, service to the community, and maintaining the high standards of our profession should be the common goals that we all strive to attain. Our component has been participating in the Lanark Park Health Fair for many years. We service hundreds of families each October. This year, the call went out for volunteers, and went unanswered. Dental Hygiene screening and education was not offered at the Fair. A crisis exists with the Dental Board of California. The Board is scheduled to expire because Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the dental hygienist’s bill that would have allowed the regulatory panel to continue beyond next year. Educators, those in the dental profession, allied health care workers and the PTA called upon their groups to contact legislators to urge support for the Bipartisan Children’s Health Insurance Bill, {SCHIP}. The President vetoed the bill. These are but a few examples of current issues that affect us all. I urge you to re-evaluate the status of your professional life. Together we can make a difference. Be a proud and informed member of ADHA, be knowledgeable and proactive, network with your colleagues by attending meetings and events. MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
